We are all hearing more and more about toxic masculinity, the negative impact of high-profile social media influencers on young men/boys and the progression of the challenging and misogynistic behaviours into younger and younger age groups. This session, and the eponymous organisation delivering it, seeks not just to offer a counterpoint but to explore, understand and suggest strategies to help schools work with boys to foster a positive and progressive vision of masculinity in our modern society. This session is relevant for members seeking to work on these issues with boys in upper primary. Key themes explored will include:
- What are the prevalent views of masculinity? What do they think it means to 'be a man' in today's world?
- What socio-cultural influences are shaping these views?
- Evidence-based strategies can we use to create open-minded and aspirational attitudes towards masculinity
This session is being delivered by Mike Nicholson of Progressive Masculinity Ltd.
After an 18 year teaching career Mike founded Progressive Masculinity in order to create safe, nonjudgemental spaces to explore what it can mean to be a man in today's world. With 4 billion men in the world Progressive Masculinity believes there can be 4 billion different ways to be a man; their work gives boys/young men the freedom and agency to design the kind of man, friend, partner and fathers they wish to be.
This session is for AHDS members only and is free to attend, taking place from 4 - 5pm.
