Each member's working hours, working life and how that interacts with the rest of their life is as unique as their own fingerprint. However, most struggle balancing the pressures of work with a reasonable work-life balance. This session is not about presenting a ready-made solution or suggesting that one individual has 'got it cracked'. Rather, this session will be a conversation with a HT member who has made big changes to her relationship with work and working hours. In addition to sharing her journey from a starting point which proved unsustainable, she will share practical information, hints and tips that others might find useful. The aim being to highlight the art of the possible and to help you think about changes you might make - big or small - to help you achieve more reasonable working hours.
Following on from the 2024 AHDS workload survey, which again showed very long average working hours, our General Secretary spoke to a number of members who reported working hours notably shorter than that average. Those conversations offered an insight into the working patterns and approaches of this group. These members are often quick to point out that some factors to do with their working hours are situational, some are personal and all were clear that they wouldn’t want to be portrayed as claiming to have solutions that would suit everyone or that they have “got it cracked”. However, these conversations did touch on common themes including an intentional approach to managing overall working time. Greg is keen to keep providing a window onto the approaches of these members. This session is a product of these continued conversations following the 2025 Workload survey, which again highlighted troublingly long working hours for many.
This session is free and for AHDS members only, 4 - 5pm on Tuesday 2nd September.
